Why Your “Tennis Elbow” Might Actually Be a Padel Problem (The Padel Tennis Surge)

Padel tennis is currently taking the world by storm. Combining elements of tennis and squash, this fast-paced, social, and accessible racquet sport has seen an explosion in popularity across local clubs and courts. However, alongside the rapid surge in new players, sports clinics are witnessing a parallel trend: a significant increase in cases of lateral elbow pain.

While most players immediately assume they have developed traditional “tennis elbow” (lateral epicondylitis), the reality is often quite different. The unique biomechanics, equipment design, and court dynamics of padel create distinct physical demands. If your outer elbow is throbbing after a match, the problem may lie with the unique demands of the padel paddle rather than classic tennis elbow.

The Rise of Padel and the Surge in Elbow Pain

Unprecedented Popularity: Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports globally, attracting players of all ages and fitness levels due to its quick learning curve and fun, doubles-focused format.
Repetitive Stress Risks: Because rallies in padel tend to be significantly longer than in traditional tennis, the forearms and wrists endure prolonged time under tension without adequate rest periods.
The Sudden Volume Spike: Many new enthusiasts go from having never played racquet sports before to playing multiple high intensity padel matches each week, placing excessive strain on unconditioned forearm tendons.

Why a Padel Paddle Affects Your Elbow Differently Than a Tennis Racket

Solid Construction with No String Cushioning: Unlike tennis racquets, which feature flexible string beds that stretch to absorb impact, padel paddles are solid composite paddles with perforations, made from carbon fibre or fibreglass with an EVA foam core. This means more shock energy is transmitted directly up the arm when the ball is struck.
Shorter Lever and Heavier Weight: Padel paddles have a shorter handle, bringing the impact zone closer to your hand. In addition, paddles are often deceptively heavy, forcing the small wrist extensor muscles to work much harder to control the balance point.
Vibration and Off-Centre Hits: Hitting the ball outside the paddle’s “sweet spot” sends severe torsional vibrations through the handle, placing additional strain on the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon at the outer elbow.

Stroke Mechanics: Wall Rebounds, Off-Wall Shots, and Wrist Flexion

Frequent Wrist-Dominant Strokes: Due to the enclosed glass court walls, players often have to hit balls late or manoeuvre out of tight corners. This frequently leads to rapid wrist flicks rather than generating power through the full-body kinetic chain.
Deceleration and Off-Wall Timing: Hitting a ball off the back glass requires precise timing. Misjudging the rebound speed forces the forearm muscles to contract eccentrically to stabilise the paddle, causing micro-tears within the tendon.
Overuse of the Slice and Overhead Bandeja: Signature padel strokes such as the bandeja or víbora require repetitive overhead arm positions combined with heavy spin control, placing considerable load on the shoulder and elbow at awkward angles.

How Farnham Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic Can Help

If elbow pain is keeping you off the court, Farnham Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic offers specialised, evidence-based care to help you return to peak performance safely. Their expert team of chartered physiotherapists understands the unique biomechanical demands of racquet sports and provides targeted solutions tailored to both your body and your equipment.

Comprehensive Biomechanical Assessment: The clinical team evaluates your upper limb mobility, wrist extensor strength, grip mechanics, and shoulder stability to identify the exact cause of your tendon overload.
Targeted Hands-On Therapy: Using manual therapy, soft tissue mobilisation, acupuncture, and advanced treatments such as Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), the clinic helps accelerate tendon healing, reduce inflammation, and break down painful scar tissue.
Padel-Specific Exercise Rehabilitation: Rather than providing generic stretches, the therapists design progressive eccentric loading programmes, kinetic chain strengthening exercises, and grip conditioning tailored specifically to padel stroke patterns.
Equipment and Technique Guidance: The clinic reviews your equipment, offering expert advice on paddle weight distribution, grip thickness customisation, anti-vibration accessories, and technique adjustments to support long-term injury prevention.

Conclusion

As padel continues its meteoric rise, staying healthy on the court requires recognising that a padel paddle places unique physical demands on your body. Treating your outer elbow discomfort as generic tennis elbow without addressing equipment factors and padel-specific stroke mechanics will only delay your recovery.

By seeking specialised assessment and treatment from the team at Farnham Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic, you can resolve tendon irritation at its source, protect your joints, and enjoy playing padel pain-free for years to come.
